PELOSI’S IMPEACHMENT GAMBIT

PELOSI’S IMPEACHMENT GAMBIT

Article II of the articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon was just the simple fact that he talked about and suggested the potential use of the IRS against one or two political opponents. – Monica Crowley

Once you’ve built the big machinery of political power, remember you won’t always be the one to run it. – P. J. O’Rourke

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work and then they get elected and prove it. – P. J. O’Rourke

People like to see honest persons. So I certainly will advise many young people who want to participate in politics, honesty is the best policy. – Ma Ying-jeou

William McGurn of Wall Street Journal Opinion page of 10/1/19 provides some provocative thoughts on Pelosi that need wider distribution.  Nancy Pelosi has now introduced the concept of Congress being in the permanent impeachment mode. She did this without a debate or vote from Congress.   She launched the Trump impeachment by personal choice.   It has been greeted with a very indifferent response.  Pelosi has not precedent for what she has done.  By eliminating the House vote, she eliminated debate and objections from the Republicans.

Comments by Doug Collins, a Republican ranking member of the Judiciary committee says, “ When one party silences the other party by refusing to hold votes, denying subpoena power, it is hiding from accountability from their electorate. It is antidemocratic.   Pelosi has denied this Congress (116th) the opportunity to debate and vote before they had to declare themselves on particular articles of impeachment.

Pelossi put the Congress in new precedent territory.  It now only takes a committee to exercise its powers on the basis of a speaker’s say so.   In 1998, Jerrold Nadler, chairman of today’s Judiciary committee, strongly objected to the Republican’s limiting floor debate to one hour before the House voted on President Clintons impeachment.

Pelossi’s decision to proceed with impeachment by fiat puts the Congress in a terrible mode. The committee only now has to have a willing Speaker and then they become in permanent impeachment mode.   They, of course, can then try to use their powers and overturn a valid election of President.

Prior to Pelossi’s action, it took the entire House to vote on  impeachment.  Now, it has transferred that power into the hands of the Speaker.  This is wrong for America.

The democrats will find that two can play that game when the Republicans win the House again.  The far left has changed politics for the worse.  The Congress was supposed to be a place for debate of the issues and voting so that the democratic process picks a winner.   The new democrats want to win at any price and that could mean the destruction of the principles in the constitution that carried this nation for 200 years.
